What happened?
=> Refined pentaxid appears to be only item affecting backpack volume. Backpack volume is limited to 720. Meaning max of 720 refined pentaxid can be carried. Appears to be a change as of today.

Only carrying an extra 720 refined pentaxid is very limiting given the universe warp ranges. Weight of pentaxid is so high, carrying enough in CV/SV alone not practical for exploration.
CV: When traveling to several star systems back-to-back in the expanded universe, one can burn through a lot of pentaxid.
It’s easy to jump 1000 or more LY visiting multiple systems and burn through 2000 or more pentaxid.
After further reflection, one can carry extra pentaxid in cargo and good CV’s can handle the extra weight. Frequently topping off the pentaxid tank as needed.
However, it was convenient to load 2000 - 3000 in the CV tank and not refill until return to home base and carry another 1000+ weightless in the backpack just in case. It was easy to pull from the backpack (where it’s weight did not slow down ships).
SV at 400 is not so much an issue. But, putting extra pentaxid in SV cargo can seriously reduce SV performance due to mass of pentaxid.
Granted, one can carry up to 720 in backpack. But, it can get used up fast recharging the shields. (Edited to add my email response Rex mentions below)
