New Year - New Thoughts? HWS PvPvE [POLL]

SO the PVP server is slowly becoming PVE? sigh

What makes you say that?

Yea I use a CV for home so I think mcprouty is right.

SO this discussion has been a good one, Iā€™ve seen a lot of great points and counterpoints i havent had the experience with to offer any insight to, but learning a lot.

The one thing iā€™ve read that i really resonated with was @Archangelā€™s comments around ROLES and ORIGINS. I would REALLY love to see the game mechanics worked on that allow (force) us to live in our rolesā€¦ Or does the story have any influence on the gameplay?

For example - As Arch alluded to:
Pirates should have little to no access to resources - They are pirates. They dont mine and build Manufacturing conglomerates - They steal stuff they need. if they didnt have the resources they need, they will HAVE to come after the other origins to get it. Pressure #1 - Force them to be pirates not for the fun of killing noobs, but because they have to do it to survive, you knowā€¦like pirates.

Traders should have access to massive resources, and they should have the mechanisms available to put those into the market place ā€“ Not from a safe perch that allows them to move goods in safety, but like traders would have to ā€“ Carry your goods to the store, risk getting knocked over on the way. In return for the access to resources (which would let them build ships to sell more readily also), they have poor access to USING things like weapons and huge thrusters. (would still need to be able to build with them in order to sell ships, etc) In order to survive, they MUST rely on theā€¦

Guardiansā€¦ The guardians should be limited in what they can do as well so that they also rely on supply from the trader factions; however we need to force a more symbiotic relationship with Guardians and Traders. There is simply no motication for a guardian to be a guardian of anything other than their own stuff. They protect traders, in return, traders keep them stocked and suppliedā€¦

And hunters - They are the ultimate merc - They serve the dollar. Like pirates, they should have limited access to resources, but the mechanic doesnt allow them to make enough profit from their role to afford that, today. Instead, as Arch noted, we traders should be asking Hunters to escort us to the EM or to Gabriel for our gold mining efforts for a fee or a cut, etc. It shouldnt be JUST assasinations. People enjoy killing each other too much to pay someone else to do it as their only source of living.

Freelancers ā€“ IMO, thereā€™s just no good reason to keep this. but for those gamers who lve hardcore, no bonus action - this faction has no limitations on access to resources, ship parts, etc.

Just some thoughts ive been noodling on since coming inā€¦ I would LOVE LOVE LOVE for @RexXxuS and team to try to find some creative ways to force us all to live in this story world, not just on this server.

Well sure, this sounds very lovely on the paper and the true story: I did this almost like this in HWS 2.0. Try to guess the outcome?
"Yep, of course they fucked on lovy dovy story and pirates and hunters wanted their resources no matter what and who cares about Traders at all?"
HWS 2.0 was really rough and before Eleon took our features we did it by ourself as good as we can but the key point was again a shitstorm about restrictions and limitations and a story not everyone liked / wanted.

As always, I know but I like it still and with the possibilities we have today maybe a try worth.
Donā€™t know about other servers and it is their choice but with the different roles we can of course push each role with supply packages for example.

But yeah, so many participants in the poll shows us that there is a great community behind the server and feedback like this is always welcome.

Any solution that involves adding a resource bottleneck to a specific origin will make donator planets pay 2 win.

I donā€™t think anyone here wants that.

I agree, its a cute idea to try and drive pirates to loot in order to survive but there are two huge issues. The first and foremost being that without resources in the first place, how can they be expected to go out and loot? Piracy only works when you can win in a fight.
Also, you do that, and everyone will just pirate from the trader factions again.

Pirates should have to warp with a survival constructor in their inventory for RP.

Just sayin.

Ah but you see youā€™d have to fly a ship with no weapons and lots of loot and rely entirely on guardians for protection. I have fond memories of how that worked for Traders in early 4.0.

Even disregarding the unarmed traders with guardian protection, there is no real way to survive on looting ships. On a very good night we may get as many as 6 CV kills. Vast majority of the time there is very little loot left as cargo very often is totally destroyed.

Sure we can dissamble your ship to the last block but as long as the waypoint issue persists itā€™s not an option and is incredibly tedious. We did do exactly that in early 4.0 when we were starting out and needed all the minerals we could get and it was soul crushing. We had a scrap yard full of ships that nobody wanted to salvage - I think SFA took care of it for us in the end.

I voted no (lower lagoon taxes), but I really wanted to vote NO leave it as it is. however we should automatically be allied to the same faction type as your own and unable to change it, having our home planet PvP requires us to work together, it gives pirates the ability to live up to their role, it gives gaurdians a reason to protect us, it allows hunters to find their target. I see lots of votes saying yes, but have you really thought about it or are you just worried that your bases will get wiped by another faction or is it simply the fact that your own kind are attacking you?

having all factions of the same typed allied will basically make it PvE anyway, but it will also make it possible for say, pirates to work together and attack traders, this will be risky because all traders can work together and our bases can help protect each other, ofc thereā€™s also the fact that we could send out an SOS to guardians to come help us and if we need more we can offer hunters a reward for coming to our rescue too.

Making it PvE will only remove a big part of the role play that comes with faction types and will leave people to be able to hide in their homes without ever needing to go out to a PvP area.

and whilst Iā€™m here, I also think that there should be a higher tax option when using the trader hub to allow us to trade between hubs instead of having to make 15 warps to sell a stack of iron at the exact hub the wanted was placed. maybe even add a delay for the transaction dependant on the distance.

Inability to break alliances goes against the entire point of being pirates which is to fight people. Freelancers would face the same problem but to a lesser extent.

Unbreakable alliances would be extremely boring.

I think that origin planets should be pvp, but restrict access to only that origin, that allows for people to learn how to fly (yes, this is a thing) as well as establish relationships with their own in a limited pvp experiance. This would ALSO allow for not having to wipe the planets/bases. Before any pirates cry about their job as raiding traders, thereā€™s still room for that.

The issue for pirates, is that many of them seem to be too impatient, they only want to pillage and kill and dont care about anyone else. Traders will go forth and collect gold meteors, hunt POIā€™s etc, but give them time to feel like they can afford to lose what they have when they go. Sustainable losses and what not.

I feel that part of this mentality and behavior of pirating has influenced the want for another pve planet. I like that an origin restriction is on the origin planets, but I dont think I want a wipe, or even a pve planet for it. I dont like wipes, but I know the reason for em. Starter planets are good for wipes, origin should be a sustainable community. If someone has a base that is too much on the server/playfield, we the community can enforce a change on it, rather than having to cry to the admins. (For instance, if a faction using 200 lights on towers, causing a laggy playfield, we can say ā€œhey, kill the lightsā€ and as a community, simply destroy the light towers if needed)

TL;DR -

We dont need another pve, we need a stepping stone for new players to get from pve to pvp with OUR SERVERā€™S pirates, they are unique to themselves, and can be a bit harsh at times, but I wouldnt trade em for any other.

yh ok I see your point with that, I guess if youā€™re living on a planet with all other from the same faction youā€™d be pretty silly to break, maybe instead make it so you canā€™t break your alliance and attack straight awayā€¦ breaking an alliance takes 24hours to register maybe.

I almost completly agreeā€¦ I am a trader but thinking about more than myself I feel others should be able to come to our planet, the starter planet is a steping stone and it is possible to stay there until you can afford lagoon tax. if pirates want to risk attacking our well defended base with all the other bases around then they should have that option. how many of us would really go live on a lava planet or somewhere else that has high pvp activity when we have a lovely little PvE planet that never gets wiped and/or attacked, you might awell remove OCD because we can store everything in our little haven.

Have you ever had a base attacked or attacked a base?

never attacked but have been attacked, why do you ask?

Because itā€™s stupidly easy to take out most bases with a bunch of CVs - even without resorting to totally cheese tactics of shooting straight down at turrets that arenā€™t able to point up.

Right now I can still use pulse lasers to surgically remove turrets without being shot back. Itā€™s only iffy when turrets are ā€œhiddenā€ (as in sitting in deep holes so that at long range you cannot see them at all)

I suspect youā€™re going to regret your choice of being able to be attacked the night that it would go live as I promise you that pirates would strip mine that salt within hours.

You remember that the Ocd in its purpose is to be used when approaching the cleaning of the server, and not as a deposit of junk, as it is currently being used.

Home planets must be the place where the faction and only the faction can have a base or freighter ship that will not be attacked by its own people, do not want the planet of origin pve, actually even suggested that it can be attacked in certain Hours over the weekend.

What does not make sense to have a planet of origin, and in it you will be attacked while sleeping for your own countrymen ā€¦ what logic of this I will displace and leave a CV charge there and when to re-log the next day, neither the dust Of it I will find ā€¦ if it is this way, that it is worth having a planet of these, it is better to live elsewhere, it does not make sense for this faction to be restricted to faction, there is no reason for its existence. Is not justified in my vision.

I think that in the planets of origin there must be a system that expels from the planet those who are outside the alliance of origin, just as it happens in the donor planets, that when we enter without permission, we are thrown back into space ā€¦

And if someone on the planet tries to leave the alliance, he can only do so after leaving the planet ā€¦

As for the initial planets, all those who reached lvl 20 and tried to return to the planet could only come in from Sv and stay for 20 min, just in case they get a newbie or someone who came down in a fresh start pod.

For those who fall into a fresh start pod. This restriction will not be valid ā€¦

ok well main turrets arenā€™t your only defence, you also have the landscape so make sure you place your turrets in a location that there wonā€™t be a hill to hide behind, if thatā€™s not an option use your drill to make it so, make sure you spread them out for cheese tactics and also make good use of small 5.8mm turrets as they are easily hidden and are a smaller taget to focus on in the heat of battle, also make good use of the N key so you can build your defences without having to work in an area limited by your actual base size, aswell as my way of thinking when it comes to defence we would be able to use our neighbours defence to increase both theirs and ours. on top of all that the placement of your turrets on your CVā€™s can add quite a punch when it comes to defence as you can shut down everything but the turrets that can shoot on planets effectively adding them to you main deffence

This is us clearing the trader planet of faction bases that did not ally. We are by no means a hardened PVP faction (Trader) but once we got done playing around with a tank column idea, and resorted to the far more effective cv on ba method, they fell very quickly. It would be this, but far worse, one hour after the planet opened to all origins.
